Abstract

The so-called institutional violence or police violence is a long-standing problem in Argentina. It is understood, in general terms, as a series of abusive practices perpetrated by the Police, and inherited from the last Civic-Military Dictatorship (1976-1983) that took place in the country. This article proposes, in the first instance, a theoretical review of the matter, investigating the most relevant production on human rights and institutional violence, in order to characterize the phenomenon and understand its origin and characteristics.
