Learning outcomes are a key element for structuring and planning teaching. The competency approach links teaching with the achievement of skills or abilities. Competence requires that conceptual knowledge be integrated with procedural knowledge, which is aimed at action and allows acting and doing in real and authentic situations. In this article the object of knowledge is analyzed, the distinctive characteristics of conceptual knowledge and procedural knowledge are identified. Both types of knowledge use different memory systems and learning modes. This knowledge is integrated into competency-based education, which implies specific challenges for teaching planning and evaluation.
