Abstract

The text reviews the presence of mathematics in the Aristotelian corpus. It examines its relationship with logic and the most characteristic substantive parts of theoretical philosophy: physic and metaphysic. It relates the debates about the foundation of mathematics of the early twentieth century with the main positions defended on the subject within the philosophical tradition. He concludes with the thesis that Aristotelian thought retains its validity for those who defend the unity of knowledge, but criticizes the great distance introduced between logic and mathematics.

Juan Arana, Universidad de Sevilla (España)

Ha realizado estudios de filosofía y física en las Universidades de Navarra y Complutense de Madrid. Es Doctor en Filosofía por la Universidad de Sevilla y catedrático en la misma universidad desde 1986. Fue becario Humboldt y profesor visitante en varias universidades alemanas, en París, San Juan de Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, Ciudad de México, Bogotá y Santiago de Chile. Es miembro de la Sociedad Leibniz de España y de la Escuela Contemporánea de Humanidades de Madrid. Se especializa en las relaciones entre filosofía, ciencia, religión y literatura. Ha fundado y dirigido tres revistas: Estudios Bibliográficos de Filosofía, Thémata, y Naturaleza y Libertad.
