Archaeology and the City: an Indissoluble Link

En este Dossier se aborda el vínculo entre arqueología y ciudad a partir de distintas aproximaciones disciplinarias al estudio de contextos urbanos en casos americanos y europeos. Se enfatiza la diversidad y complejidad de los aportes que la arqueología efectúa. La indagación arqueológica incorpora, entre otras, preguntas sobre el papel de los núcleos urbanos en el proceso colonial iberoamericano, el aporte indígena al proceso de fundación, abandono, refundación de ciudades en el siglo XVI-XVII, su variabilidad respecto de escenarios políticos o ambientales adversos, la hibridación material de las tradiciones constructivas debido a la cohabitación hispano-indígena, la transformación de la vida cotidiana luego de los procesos de independencia en el siglo XIX, en fin, la patrimonialización del pasado y la manipulación conflictiva de los monumentos conmemorativos en el siglo XX. Se valora el aporte de estas líneas que elevan al foro una amplia discusión sobre los alcances científicos y compromisos públicos que asume hoy la arqueología de y en la ciudad.
