Itinerary of a Khipu: Weaving the Threads of its History

In this paper, we present the research conducted by the Archaeology Department of the “Juan B. Ambrosetti” Ethnographic Museum on khipu -23525-, one of the four specimens in the Museum's collection. This object was dissociated from its information because it lacked an identifying inventory number. Through research that combined various approaches, such as techno-morphological studies, analysis of its state of conservation, archival research, and interviews with Museum staff, it was possible not only to recover part of its institutional journey but also to recontextualize the object by adding new layers of meaning. The perspective based on the concept of itinerary allowed for a deeper exploration of the relationships between the object, people and institutions, enabling new strategies for its conservation and highlighting the value of cultural heritage.
