Abstract

This article researches the Latinisms included into the Byzantine vocabulary, at different times and also the way and the scope of their reception among scholars and among the wider people. They form a 'utopia' in the sense they are accepted as technical or colloquial terms without the awareness of their origin. Byzantium might have been Roman but not Latin: Latin resides in Byzantium as an exiled.
