History of the journal

The Boletín de Estudios Geográficos (BEG) is a scientific journal published by the Institute of Geography, part of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, of the National University of Cuyo.

The first issue of BEG appeared in 1948, almost a decade after the creation of the University and a year after the "Section of Geographical Studies", within the framework of the then Institute of "History and Auxiliary Disciplines".

Its founding director was Professor Martín Pérez, who was succeeded in the task by; Mariano Zamorano, Ricardo Capitanelli, María Furlani de Civit, Eduardo Pérez, Gladys Molina, Gloria Zamorano, Moira Alessandro and Silvia Robledo, currently.

The founding objectives of the Boletín are linked to those of the University and the Section, which became the Institute of Geography in 1954, which were to intensify geographic studies in general and those related especially to the Cuyo Region, with the purpose of disseminating them and promoting the specialization of students and graduates. In the presentation of the first issue, the purpose of not remaining in an "unfruitful isolation" was highlighted and emphasis was placed on the effort to coordinate efforts with institutions and scientists who carry out geographic research in the country and the world (BEG; 1948, vol. 1 no. 1, pp. 2).

Due to its continuity and long history over time, the BEG can be considered the oldest academic Geography scientific journal in Argentina. Throughout its journey of more than 70 years, it has changed in formats and frequency, but it maintained its original purpose of being the means to disseminate the investigative work carried out by the members of the Institute of Geography. Notwithstanding this, the Boletín has always been open to contributions from other research centres, from the country and the world, with which it has maintained fluid exchanges of publications.

Since its appearance in 1948, 110 issues have been published, forming a valuable legacy, recently enhanced by the digitalisation of the entire collection that can be consulted online and downloaded from the University and Faculty's Internet portals.

Currently, and while it is changing into an electronic journal, its founding objective remains redefined in terms of disseminating original and unpublished research work from the regional, national and international scientific community. The topics of geographic interest revolve around problems of the territory, the environment and society focused on their relationships and on different temporal and spatial scales from the local to the global. Bibliographic reviews, theses, critical reflections, interviews with leaders in the discipline and minutes of scientific events are also published. As of 2019, the Boletín de Estudios Geográficos (ISSN 2525-1813) stopped being printed, becoming an exclusively digital journal.
