Indigenous Knowledge and Archaeology in Mendoza, Argentina: Weaving Connections through Pottery

In Mendoza, Argentina, various collaborative initiatives between local communities and archaeologists have been developed over the past decade. Within this context, interactions with indigenous communities have gained significant momentum in recent years. This paper presents our efforts since 2022, focused on fostering intercultural dialogue. We highlight four distinct activities, tied together by their thematic emphasis on pottery: outreach projects in the Uspallata Valley community for the International Day of Indigenous Women, a research project exploring the exchange of knowledge surrounding the symbolism of ceramic designs; and an interdisciplinary knowledge-sharing initiative with an archaeologist specializing in Iberian ceramics. In the conclusion, we reflect on the imperative to cultivate meaningful knowledge dialogues and deepen collaborative efforts that promote respectful engagement. This involves critically interrogating the enduring dynamics of coloniality/modernity and considering alternative relational paradigms, particularly between Indigenous women and academic scholars, to co-create and advance knowledge production.
