The Concept of the Inhabitable from the Relationship with Silent Film in "El vampiro" by Horacio Quiroga

Abstract

In this article we propose to analyse the concept of the inhabitable, based on the relationship with silent film, in the short story “El vampiro”, by Horacio Quiroga, in which the author's tribute to silent film is also evident at a time when it is being replaced by sound. In the corpus analysed, the close relationship that critics have seen between cinema and literature at the beginning of the 20th century is clearly reflected. Both in the author's publications in magazines and in his short stories of the period, we can appreciate Horacio Quiroga's extensive knowledge of photography and aspects related to cinema. This knowledge is reflected, in “El vampiro”, in the narrative importance that one of his characters, the spectre of an actress, acquires in relation to photography and cinema.
