The dignity of silence

Perhaps that dignity of silence alluded to by Maurice Blanchot in L'espace littéraire can encompass what begins to murmur when the authority and consistency of an affirmation, over which the writer no longer retains any authority, dissolve, at the moment when the noise subsides and the word that lies beneath the sand, guarded by silence, awaiting to be heard, struggles to be spoken; perhaps there an immensity of possibilities can open up that only silence is capable of nurturing and protecting; perhaps what is written, as Blanchot seems to suggest, is only the manifestation of an illusion, the prefiguration of a prolonged and serene fading away. However, how to care for that dignity? How to save it? How to sustain oneself in a word carved and suspended in the air over which one no longer has any kind of dominion? These pages reflect on these questions.
