An analysis of the relationship between Cybele and Attis in Herodotus and Catullus

Abstract

Attis, Phrygian paredros and eunuch priest of the Goddess Mother is a major figure in the development of the mythic and cultic representations of Cybele in ancient religion and culture, especially in the Rome of the Imperial era. Nonetheless, his emergence in certain Phrygian epigraphic inscription and his representation in certain literary Greek evidence is problematic when it comes to analyzing his role and function in the mythic and historical construction of his figure along with the Goddess. The purpose of this research will be to show the constructions and mythic-historical storytelling about Attis’s literary and historical figure in Phrygia, Greece, and Rome.

Profesor de Filosofía por el Colegio Politécnico Avenida Independencia, Licenciado en Filosofía y Humanidades por la Universidad Alberto Hurtado (Chile) y Máster en culturas y lenguas de la antigüedad (con especialización en filología clásica) por la Universidad de Barcelona (España).
Sus actuales áreas de investigación se estructuran en dos ejes: a) mitos, cultos y ritos de la antigüedad: reinterpretación y alteración de antiguas divinidades orientales en la cultura griega y romana, y b) epistemología antigua: análisis semiótico de la relación entre signo y nombre en textos filosóficos de la antigüedad.
