Cultural Landscape in Accelerated Times: A Reexamination

The article discusses the relevance of the culturalist approach to landscape in the context of the planetary ecological crisis and contemporary environmental studies, a century after its fundamental components were exposed by the American geographer Carl O. Sauer. Based on recognizing the historical trajectory of the cultural landscape approach and the necessary adaptations, it is re-evaluated as a theoretical framework that allows recognition of the integral character of sociocultural and biophysical elements on the ground, from local and socially particular scales. To this end, an analytical description is made of the considerations or contributions established in the field of geography, especially from traditional cultural geography, the so-called new cultural geography, and the spatial turns. Finally, the relevance is highlighted based on necessary considerations in the current context, called “Great Acceleration”, characterized by exponential population growth, rampant urbanization, massive use of motorized vehicles, and fossil energy consumption, among other aspects. With this proposal, we argue that the cultural approach to landscape is a way of reflexively positioning oneself concerning the drastic and accelerated changes of contemporary landscapes, based on their long-standing theoretical foundations, with a broad trajectory in the analytical study of human-land interactions.
