Transformation of Environmental Awareness in Nursing Students: The Impact of a Cross-Curricular Educational Program on Building a Sustainable Ecological Culture

Abstract

The integration of environmental education in nursing professional training represents a crucial challenge for developing environmental sustainability competencies within the healthcare sector. This research evaluated the effectiveness of a transversal environmental education program in building an ecological culture among nursing students. A quasi-experimental design with two counterbalanced groups (pre-test/post-test) was implemented at the Professional School of Nursing of the Universidad Tecnológica de los Andes, Andahuaylas, Peru. From a population of 603 students, a representative sample of 168 participants (age range: 16-24 years) was selected. The intervention included training modules on environmental sustainability, hospital waste management, and ecological responsibility in nursing practice. Data were collected through structured observation and validated checklists (Cronbach's α = 0.89). Results showed a significant increase (p<0.001) in environmental knowledge (∆=38.5 %), pro-environmental attitudes (∆=42.3 %), and sustainable practices (∆=35.7 %) in the experimental group. The program proved effective in building an ecological culture, suggesting the importance of integrating environmental education into the nursing curriculum.

Obtuvo su título de Abogada y el grado de Magíster Scientiae en Derecho con mención en Derecho Empresarial en la Universidad Nacional del Altiplano, Perú. Desde octubre de 2014, se desempeña como docente en la misma universidad, impartiendo cursos relacionados con su especialidad. Además, ha ejercido la docencia en la Universidad Alas Peruanas y en SENCICO. Su línea de investigación se centra en el derecho, con énfasis en temáticas ambientales y de salud.
