Abstract

In A Room of One’s Own, published in 1929, Virginia Woolf recovers the line of argument of the conferences on women and the novel, which she gives in October 1928 to a group of young students at Newnham College and Girton College (Cambridge). Women and Fictional Narrative, a short essay she published in March 1929, while writing A Room of One’s Own, stands as a midpoint between the 1928 conferences and her celebrated essay. Thus brought together, these three moments integrate the same reflective process around literature written by women. This essay proposes a journey through this process, explores Virginia Woolf’s tensions with the university environment, explores the discursive strategies used in A Room of One’s Own, and, with regard to Women and narrative fiction, highlights those aspects that situate this text as a key piece between the October 1928 conferences and A Room of One’s Own.
