Abstract

In the present work we address the historical novel Isabel by Javier Olivares (2012), which intention is, review the path of life growth of Isabel I of Castile. Our main purpose is to review the “transition process” present in the novel. The story is about an imposing woman, who fought valiantly in a time of great changes and complex intrigues. Leads to an inexperienced young woman, who gave everything for an obsession: be the queen.
Moreover, in our work, we review that the journey of metamorphosis occurs in the central female character in Olivares' work, to identify how she is constantly constructed and reconstructed through her life.
In adittion of that, it is significant to highlight it from a current perspective, the Madrid writer reworks the personality of the Queen of Castile and gives her interiority, reason, awareness of the role she has to fulfill and, above all, her feminine condition. Likewise, from a gender perspective, our analysis reviews the feminine condition, which attention is, preferably, paid to the social image and the role assumed by the medieval noble woman in an essentially masculine society.
