Abstract

Despite linguistic and cultural differences, many languages around the world share a troubling feature: the capacity to discriminate through language. This study focuses on modern Chinese and examines how gender inequalities are constructed and perpetuated through linguistic markers, grammatical structures, graphic radicals, proverbs, and cultural metaphors. From seemingly neutral constructions to traditional expressions with strong symbolic connotations, the Chinese language reflects and reproduces a hierarchical view of gender. As a point of comparison, brief references to Spanish are introduced to highlight similarities and differences in the linguistic construction of femininity, shedding light on how different languages shape—both in parallel and, at times, divergently—the relationship between gender, power, and discourse. Far from being a purely linguistic phenomenon, sexism in language is presented as a symptom of a deeper ideology embedded in social structures. This paper ultimately invites reflection on the role of language as an ideological vehicle, capable not only of describing the world but also of shaping it, delimiting what a woman can be, do, or say within a given symbolic order.
