Almudena de Arteaga's work, La Beltraneja. El pecado oculto de Isabel la Católica, can be considered another link in the new historical novel. Once again, literature positions itself as a complex and controversial social discourse, triggering an introspective exercise in the subject regarding their pre-established categories of thought.
The story narrates part of the life of Juana La Beltraneja, daughter of King Enrique IV and heir to the throne of Castile; eventually replaced by her aunt Isabel (the Catholic). Using the discursive void left by history regarding this character to her advantage, the author shifts the focus of the narrative voice to the side silenced by centuries of Castilian officialdom. In this spirit, the novel closes with a confession written by Juana herself, in which she reflects on her condition as a woman in a context that sought to subalternize her and invalidate her legitimacy to the throne.
In this sense, we consider the final chapter to be crucial in relation to the dispute surrounding the construction of female identity within current social discourse. Its analysis will allow us to glimpse a new interpretative path in which history and literature will be the triggers for an exercise in subjective retrospection.
