Abstract

Marta Sanz's novel "The Anatomy Lesson" connects painting and writing as means to explore human essence and subjectivity. Drawing inspiration from Rembrandt’s Baroque painting, Sanz crafts a literary self-portrait examining her life from childhood to adulthood, highlighting her personality’s evolution and social expectations she has faced. The narration blends autofiction and self-portraiture, where the author reflects on personal truth, identity construction, and the tensions between reality and fiction. Using a clear and precise style, Sanz critiques familial and social mandates imposed especially on women, addressing themes of perfectionism, social pressure, and self-demand. Art, both painting and writing, is portrayed not only as aesthetic pleasure but as a tool for self-knowledge and social critique, revealing both visible and hidden layers of the self. The work presents a profound expression of subjectivity, marked by humor, irony, and sincerity, inviting readers to reflect on truth and fiction in identity formation.
