Abstract

In María de Zayas's work "Tarde llega el desengaño" (“Late Comes Disappointment”), the author boldly deconstructs beliefs in the superiority of male understanding over the inferiority of female intellectual capacities, demonstrating that the violent authority of the former is unhealthy and that their tyranny generates toxic gender relations that are highly topical. In these relationships, her pen reflects on female intelligence in light of their capacities for preaching, eloquence, and politics, and examines the cultural matrices that have influenced an idealization of "positive" and "negative" stereotypes of men and women. Zayas destroys the supremacy of men over the female world, and her fictional narrative affirms that women can write and publish books with lessons in civility and wisdom, teaching that no good can come from those who speak ill of and treat women badly.
