Offshore Oil Exploration off Mar del Plata and Its Media Coverage

In late 2021, the Argentine government approved three new offshore oil exploration areas off the coast of Mar del Plata, triggering a conflict that garnered significant public and media attention. The publication of the decree authorizing seismic explorations rapidly activated media coverage in newspapers, online news platforms, and television channels, generating an intermediate public space in which diverse discourses began to circulate and influence the political debate. Within this context, the present study offers an in-depth analysis of how the press media functioned as a public arena during this conflict, identifying and characterizing the positions adopted by the actors involved. A mixed-method approach was adopted, divided into two stages: the first consisted of an analysis of a corpus comprising all digital news articles published between December 24, 2021 (the date the project was approved) and December 31, 2022 (following the judicial authorization of the exploration activities); the second involved a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). Among the main findings, three thematic axes were identified as structuring the public debate—technical, socioeconomic, and environmental feasibility—allowing for an analysis of the reasons behind both support for and opposition to the project, based on the articulation of opposing arguments.
