Abstract

In the context of the Civilian-Military Coup of 1964 in Brazil, the rio-grandenses ruling class, especially farmers and entrepeneurs, released manifestations in newspaper attacking President João Goulart. Many Who had been beside the Campaign of the Legality in 1961, had changed sides and Coup appeared as the defenseof the Constitution. The goal was clear: to prevent the the chain of Lawfulness was repeated, in the case in pratice censorship and state control to avoid the reaction forces contrary to Coup D'Etat in Rio Grande do Sul. Victorious the Coup, measures repression was swift, as nattionally,  and "Clean Operation" began to intervene in social and political movements that advocated resitance. The objective of this paper is to explain the processo the Coup D'Etat of 1964 in Rio Grande do Sul and the beginning of the dictatorship in the state, essential for the
establishment of the fist National Security Dictatorship in the Southern Cone.
