From the sanctuary of Bled to the heights of the Triglav: mountains, museums and myths in the history and identity of Slovenia.

The present works explores the karstic and alpine geography of Slovenia, analysing the importance of Mount Triglav, the sanctuary on the Lake Bled and Postjona Cave in the construction of the national identity. So as to carry out this research, the author travelled through the archeologic, ethnographic and historic museums in Ljubljana; she explored the religious places of pilgrimage in the Lakes Bled and Bohinj, the Adriatic town of Piran, and the biggest cave in the karstic region of Slovenia. She also realised a successful climbing, through the North wall, of the top of the Triglav, visiting the centenary mountain hut in Kredarica, and the highest chapel in Slovenia. The name and the image of the Mount are mentioned in signs, shops and urban graffitis. The climbing is part of the popular imagination as a condition of national identity; while foreign visitors are used to listen: “you don’t know Slovenia if you haven’t climbed the Triglav”.
