Institute of Art History (IHA)
Faculty of Philosophy and Letters – National University of Cuyo

The Institute of Art History (IHA) of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the National University of Cuyo was founded in 1956 by Dr. Carlos Massini Correas, who served as its first director. Since its creation, the Institute has promoted a sustained program of scientific research publications within the university context.

Five years after its foundation, in 1961, the Institute launched its first publication: Cuadernos de Historia del Arte (CHA). The journal was created with the aim of guiding scholarly production toward the study of local artistic manifestations within the National University of Cuyo.

From the outset, and in accordance with the vision of its founder, a systematic survey and documentation of artistic production was initiated, generating a space devoted to epistemological discussions in the field of art history. Scientific research initially focused on national art and later expanded to address historical and aesthetic issues related to international art.

Between 1961 and 1972, eleven consecutive issues were published. From its beginnings, CHA became a platform where prominent scholars and thinkers from the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, together with distinguished members of the National University of Cuyo, disseminated their research. Among the local contributors were Carlos Massini Correas, Diego Pró, Adolfo Ruíz Díaz, Ladislao Boda, Víctor Delhez, Herberto Hualpa, Blanca Romera de Zumel, Marta Gómez de Rodríguez Britos, Delia Villalobos, Alberto Musso, Graciela Verdaguer, and Mirta Scokin de Portnoy. The journal also featured contributions from distinguished external researchers such as Mario Buschiazzo, Damián Bayón, José Emilio Burucúa, J. M. Taverna Yrigoyen, and Daniel Schavelzon.

Following the death of Massini Correas, the Institute entered a period of transition. Publications resumed in 1987. Later, between 1995/1996 and 2015, a renewed editorial structure was consolidated, both in layout and format. During this stage, the journal evolved from an annual to a biannual publication.

In 2016, on the occasion of its 60th anniversary, the Institute released a special edition entitled IHA: 60 Years of Research on Argentine Art from a Regional Perspective, published in two volumes. These changes reflected the need to modernize and adapt the journal to new editorial standards.

Finally, beginning in 2017, in response to technological advancements and the need to pursue journal indexing, a new digital stage was initiated through the implementation of Open Journal Systems (OJS), an open-source journal management system. This platform optimizes editorial workflows, ensures double-blind peer review, enhances international visibility, and strengthens scientific quality, while maintaining the traditional printed format.

CHA remains part of a sustained and consistent research publication policy of the Institute of Art History and continues to serve as a fundamental channel for the communication and dissemination of scholarly production.
