Cuadernos de Historia del Arte endorses the Ten Principles for the Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Scholarly and Academic Journals (view), developed by the Centro Argentino de Información Científica y Tecnológica (CAICYT-CONICET) to promote transparent practices, research integrity, and human accountability in editorial processes.

Ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence tools

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools must be used to improve research processes. Their use remains under the supervision and responsibility of the authors. AI tools may be useful at various stages of research, but their outputs are not considered original content.

Authors are responsible for reviewing, verifying, and correcting all AI-generated outputs, taking into account the potential biases that may arise from their use during the research process.

Authors must undertake to use AI tools responsibly, respect intellectual property rights and data integrity, and refrain from data manipulation, plagiarism, or the generation of misleading content that could undermine the credibility of the work.

Transparency and disclosure of the use of AI tools

In accordance with the principles of transparency and fairness, AI must not replace critical analysis or the research process. It may only be used as a supplementary tool to improve the quality and clarity of manuscripts. Authors who use AI at any stage in the development of their manuscript must explicitly disclose that use. They must clearly explain which AI tools were used, at what stage of the research they were used, and how they contributed to the research report.

This disclosure must be included in the methods section to promote transparency and strengthen ethical practice in scholarly publishing. Transparency not only builds trust in the research process but also enables other researchers to reproduce or evaluate the work more effectively.

Prohibition of AI authorship

In accordance with the ethical principles governing scholarly publications, authorship is strictly human. AI cannot be listed as an author or co-author, nor may it be included as an author in the bibliographic references of any article. Authorship entails responsibilities that technologies cannot assume.

AI may only be used as a tool and must not receive authorship credit, thereby preserving the integrity of the research process.

Authors must ensure that every included image or figure remains authentic and does not distort the research findings.

Use of AI tools to generate data

Research data must not be generated using AI tools. Researchers must collect and interpret data through the rigorous application of appropriate methods and instruments, which must be described in detail in the methods section.

Role of editors and the editorial review process

Editors must oversee and ensure authors’ compliance with these policies.

Editors must review and update statements concerning the use of AI tools to prevent misunderstandings or improper practices that could compromise the scholarly quality of articles.

If any doubt or ambiguity arises regarding the use of AI tools in a manuscript, editors may request additional clarification before accepting and publishing the article.

The journal’s originality and copyright declaration must refer to its policies on the use of AI tools so that authors are aware of them.

Lastly, the editors will oversee the implementation of this policy, which will be revised whenever necessary or when the circumstances under which it was developed change.
